4 Tips to Stay Productive

Growing up I’ve always tried to do as many things as I possibly can and there were times when I was able to juggle everything and there were times when it all came crashing down. It wasn’t until I had a conversation with someone who I respect a lot and he told me about The 4 D’s of Productivity. These are some of the habits that many successful people do, whether they realize it, or not and is something super easy that you and I can integrate into our lives immediately. I have been practicing these habits over the past year and I really believe that they have helped me be much more productive and keep me focused on my goals.

So, let’s say that you have a task. This could be something minor like taking the garbage out, or maybe something major like paying taxes, or renovating your house. Regardless, these 4 tips can be used for any situation:

1) The first thing you can do is to DO the task right away. This task might be the most important and needs to be completed immediately like an emergency or something that has a deadline, or maybe it’s the one that makes the most sense to do right away and is efficient. This is my favourite of the four.

2) The second thing you can do is recognize that someone else might be more qualified or do a better job than you would and you should DELEGATE that task. In my opinion, this is something that great leaders do very well because they are able to recognize their team’s strengths and weaknesses. If I was asked to make costumes for the entire cast of a theatre production, I would most likely recognize immediately that I don’t know how to sew and even if I did, it would take a lot of time (like years) to learn how to make something that looks presentable) and I would delegate this by hiring someone. Sometimes you don’t have a large team to delegate the task to, so what I’ve found works very well are different online outsourcing websites live fiverr.com where you can post a job, choose a price range and bam — the job’s done!

3) The third thing you can do is you can DELAY the task. There are certain tasks that do not need to happen right away. If I think back a few weeks ago when my brother got married, I had a few tasks to do that day. I had to eat breakfast, go for a run, get ready while the photographers took photos, and make it to the wedding on time. I ended up moving my run until later in the day, and I was fine with delaying it because it wasn’t the top of my priority list — my brother’s wedding was. Delaying a task can be dangerous, so I recommend two things: set a time when you will complete the task and never delay a task twice!

4) The fourth thing you can do is DITCH it, or forget about it. There are so many things we do in our lives that are not important in the grand scheme of things. For me, I’ve completely cut out watching tv because it doesn’t help me reach my goals. I understand that for some people sitting back and watching their favourite tv show is relaxing, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I’d rather go for a run or a swim and it helps me in so many ways. I encourage you to make time today to think about what your goals are in life and what things could you ditch that are stopping you from reaching them.
